Jo Aylmer

About
Jo Aylmer is an artist, maker and educator.
Jo is motivated by the potential of materials and uses thinking through making as a preferred method. This way of working allows for collaborative relationships to develop with materials and allows for the the unexpected.
Clay has been a central to her practice through vessels and sculpture. Motivated by an interest in the metaphorical potential of material and form, past work has explored how relationships can be choreographed between white clay bodies and other materials. Sculptural pieces pursue specific qualities of white ceramic bodies such as luminosity, liquidity or fragility.
Jo's recent research and creative practice are framed by methodologies that challenge anthropocentric notions of our place in the world. She has changed focus to return to clays’ source – to return to the earth and exploring how relationships can be created with and explore potential collaborations with soil, its processes, inhabitants, and history.
Jo has been shortlisted for the Beers Lambert Contemporary Emerging Artist Award and features in the Aesthetica Art Prize’s ‘100 Contemporary Artists’ publication.
